Kink on Camera
I read an interesting post that caused me to think about how we’re presented on tv.
The blog post is here – from Pandora Blake’s blog.
She talks about watching a currently popular show, Castle, coming to the conclusion that the Nathan Fithian character is “sexually submissive.”
I suppose the thing that most interested me first in reading it was the fact that I’ve watched the show off and on and never picked it up.
I’m going to have to go back and re-watch. I don’t know that I watched the early episodes and we all know that sometimes television shows box their characters in, make them more and more what they are as the show becomes more popular.
It did remind me, though, of how little there really is on television, and in popular media, that really represents – or interests, or speaks to me, or turns me on.
The only other mainstream show of which I am aware is the one we all know, the Lady Heather episodes of CSI.
I know the furries (or is it Furries?) don’t like their representation on the show, and I don’t believe the Adult Babies and Diaper Lovers liked their representation any better, but I thought we actually came out of it pretty well.
Ok, I know that Lady Heather’s story arc was not a happy one and it didn’t end well.
I know that the representations of us were not overly flattering, in some cases, ok, yeah, gotcha.
But that first episode?
Lady Heather was HOT.
Gil Grissom was INTERESTED.
There was CHEMISTRY.
You saw that they understood each other, and that there was something between them.
Usually on-screen romance bores me.
The women set up ridiculous and ludicrous devices to make men “prove” their devotion, love, whatever.
Men behave like especially immature frat boys, avoiding commitment and adult relationships as devotedly as they are blind in recognizing manipulation.
That one was hot.
The Secretary got it right, too, I always thought, but that was a male Top and female bottom and while I appreciated the inclusion and the correctness of the way in which they got it right, it didn’t do anything for ME.
So, I’m going to have to go back and watch Castle, aren’t I?
I could cope with the idea of Nathan Fithian as a sexual submissive. Yes, I could cope with that quite nicely, in fact.
I believe I’m going to give that thought all the attention which I do believe it deserves.
